Hilton Head has its own airport, and the Savannah International Airport is only half an hour away with ground service to Hilton Head available. Driving in is easy. Once you get to I-95, you have the benefit of four lanes the rest of the way to your destination. From Exit 8 (near Hardeeville, SC) Highway 278 is escorted by many of the courses in this book, leading to the bridges that connect Hilton Head to the mainland. U.S. 17 leads to U.S. 21, which takes you through Beaufort and on to Fripp Island. Throughout either drive, you are treated to fabulous samples of the Lowcountry life and spectacular marsh views.

The Cross-Island Expressway has combined convenience with outstanding views of Broad Creek.

Even if Hilton Head is not your final destination, consider this, location remains a significant part of the attraction of the area. It is just a day's drive from most Eastern metropolitan areas, making it convenient as a stopover on the way farther south or north, as the case may be. You have access to great beaches, golf courses, restaurants and accommodations, and you will also be close to many other areas. You could make day trips to the beautifully historic cities of Beaufort, Charleston and Savannah.

Hilton Head Island is located near the southernmost point of the South Carolina coastline.

By Car: The most direct route is Highway 278 at Exit 8 from I-95.

By Train: Amtrak service is available at Savannah, GA (45 min. from Hilton Head) and Yemassee, SC (30 min. from Beaufort).

By Boat: Hilton Head and Beaufort are on the Intracoastal Waterway and boaters can be serviced at numerous marinas.

By Air: USAir Express from Charlotte and Continental Connection from Atlanta have daily commuter flights to Hilton Head Island Airport. The nearest international airport is Savannah, GA, just 45 minutes from the island. Delta, USAirways, AirTran, United Express, Corporate Express/Midway, COMAIR/ DeltaConnection and Continental Express offer several flights daily into Savannah. All flights are met by ground transportation companies.
